Do you find this story believeable? why or why not?
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — Cambodian Buddhist monks are getting some slack to watch the World Cup on television, but not much.
They’re not allowed to cheer, get excited or bet on the matches.
They normally aren’t supposed to watch TV, movies or artistic displays. According to Buddhism’s strictest rules, they should abstain from pleasurable activities. More than 90 percent of the country’s 13 million people are Buddhist.
The Supreme Patriarch, Non Ngeth, is willing to make allowances for the World Cup, though.
The games in Germany began Friday and run until July 9.
He has cause for some concern about monk behavior. In recent years, several monks have made newspaper headlines for fighting with slingshots and petrol bombs at a temple, molesting a boy, beating a man and stealing motorcycles.
This is a question about Buddhist TRADITION and what the MEDIA says.
Buddhism is not about living in a certain set of circumstances, like a monastery, for example. Buddhism is practiced anywhere and everywhere, all the time.
If people want to practice in a strictly traditional way, that’s their choice. If they want to bend the rules of their tradition, that’s also their choice. These are not of any importance. Each persons practice is in what they do, and how they do it. It doesn’t really matter where or how a person practices. What matters is the practice itself. Its kind of like being a good athlete, you have different fields with different rules for each game. Whatever game you play, play it well.
Of course, your question is based on some publication that must sell their publication to continue to stay in business. Often, lies are published on purpose. You can’t count on the media for truth. It seems that lies sell more publications than truth, and these publications are doing what they have to to stay in business.
